Contemporary African Pop at its best !
Sara Tavares was only 16 years old when she won two of Portugal’s most prestigious TV music contests. Being born as a child of Cape Verdian immigrants, Sara grew up in two cultures. Initially known as a singer and composer of R’n’B and Soul, she gradually added more and more African music to her compositions.
Authentic and culturally inspired!
Her second album “Mi Ma Bô”, produced by Parisian Lokua Kanza, reached Gold status in Portugal and was a mix of African rhythms and melodic pop songs. After a long wait of five years, during which she did a lot of travelling in Africa, finally her new album “Balancé” was released in February 2006.
On this record Sara wrote and composed all the songs and played many of the instruments herself. She also produced the album. “Balancé” is a beautiful piece of work in which Sara shows to be an extremely gifted singer/songwriter, that has managed to combine in a subtle and honest way contemporary music with her African roots. She was nominated for “Globos de Ouro”, the Portuguese Grammies in the Category Best Artist for her new album, which went Gold in her home country. In the end she only lost to MARIZA. On October 25th 2008 the Live DVD “Alive! in Lisboa” was released – and it impressively documents the brilliant stage presence of this excellent artist.
In 2006 and 2007 she went on a very successful tour through Europe playing big festivals (Stimmenfestival Lörrach, Masala Weltbeat Festival, Kulturzelt Kassel, ZMF Freiburg, Jazz Sommer Graz, etc. ) as well as sold-out club shows. Sara also toured in 2008, enchanting audiences at such prestigious venues as Concert House Vienna or Opera House Nuremberg.
Her new album will be released in summer 2009.
