Artist Information

She is the „Queen of Fado”. BBC named her the “Best European Artist World Music” three times already, which makes her Portugal’s most attractive and successful cultural export. No one represents Fado the way Mariza does as she has become a real icon. Consequently, she was featured as one in the latest movie of acclaimed Spanish director Carlos Saura, “Fados”.

Her first album “Fado em min”, which was released in 2001, went quadruple platinum in Portugal and helped her tremendously in gaining international attention. In 2002 she already performed at such well-known festivals and locations as the Quebec Summer Festival, Hollywood Bowl, WOMAD Festival and Central Garden New York.

Impressive stage-presence, enormous mimic and gestural variety of expression as well as stirring vocal intensity are the main reasons for sold-out concerts at renowned venues during her extensive tour across 4 continents, including: Royal Festival Hall London, Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall New York, etc. In Germany she enthused capacity crowds at Philharmonic Hall Cologne, Alte Oper Frankfurt and Prinzregentheater Munich. Her album “Transparente” had little trouble climbing up the Portuguese charts, peaking at No. 1. It also reached the top ten in Finland, Iceland and the Netherlands. From then on, no one could doubt her status as an internationally acclaimed diva.

As a result of numerous successful concerts which saw Mariza collaborating with classical orchestras, one of these spectacular performances was recorded and released as the Live-DVD “Concerto em Lisboa” in 2006. Selected songs off of her three previous albums were presented live in front of 20.000 excited people, the entire arrangement provided by Brazilian legend Jacques Morelenbaum.

In May 2007 she introduced her new arrangements to German and Austrian audiences as she performed at the sold-out Concert House of Vienna as well as the “Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele” and “Zeltival Karlsruhe”.

Her new studio album “Terra” which was released in September 2008 through EMI, certainly is her most cosmopolitan piece of work to date and is sure to be a success once again. It was recorded under the direction of Spanish flamenco-guitarist and producer Javier Limón, with the collaboration of excellent musicians like Briton Dominic Miller (longtime guitarist of Sting) or Cuban jazz-legend Chucho Valdès.

In Autumn 2008 her 12-day-tour had her performing at venues such as Philharmonic Hall Cologne, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Prinzregententheater Munich or Admiralspalast Berlin. It’s obvious: Mariza makes her presence felt in Germany as well.

In March 2010 she is back on German stages.
