The Algerian star Akli D. with his album “Ma yela” which was produced by Manu Chao, adds just another astonishing chapter to the history of Because Records, the team behind the biggest world music success story of the last years, Amadou & Mariam.
Manu Chao discovered Akli’s potential through seeing him live on stage. The work for Akli’s second album finally combined both of their artistic talents, as Manu Chao acted as the producer, leading to this high quality release.
“Ma yela” is the perfect example of Akli’s great musical abilities, retaining all the spontaneity and seriousness of the first 'Anef-As Trankil', which received rave reviews.
Akli’s music is unique by its ingenious and innovative musical combination of Afro, Raggae, Chaâbi, Folk, Blues, Celtic and Gnawa Music. His songs bare charm and spirit, as well as serious discussion about his life and experiences, love, peace and brotherhood.
After the Album was released in France in spring and in the UK in autumn 2006, Akli D. convinced audiences of his live qualities through numerous gigs. The biggest and most renowned were his live performances at the London Jazz Festival and the Genets Festival Voix du Monde.
In addition to other artists such as Souad Massi, coming from a similar immigration background, Akli D. comes to the public fore, as the story of his life and musical way is exceptional.
He has received international attention and took the spotlight in press, e.g. the cover story of the f-roots Magazine Womex Edition 2006 and an encompassing background story in the “Daily Telegraph”.
In 2007 he played an amazing tour in Germany/Austria. Not only was he the opening act at the renowned Salam Orient Festival in Vienna but also performed terrific shows at Bardentreffen in Nuremberg, Odysseen Festival, the Weltmusikfestival in the Palmengarten/Frankfurt and at the Muensterland festival.
For the upcoming season he will be back on tour, adding the next chapter to his incomparable musical life and success.
