DUEL’s performance is simply irrestible, a display of musical skills and comedical creativity by two rivalling virtuosos – Laurent Cirade at cello and Paul Staicu at piano. That means Musical Comedy at a top-level.
They prove in a truly refreshing and hilarious way that classical music doesn’t necessarily have to be boring. Effortlessly, the two artists do it all, from action-packed entertainment to musical parodies to poetry. In combination with an incomparable mixture of absurdity, friendship, cynicism and innocence Cirade and Staicu present an immense range, including Lou Reed, Bach or The Beatles. Just like a crazy musical version of a classic buddy movie, they impersonate two completely contrary characters, one being the great tyrant, the other one the sneaky little buddy. They can neither live with nor without each other. Witnessing their comedic program which is an outburst of virtuosity and incredible fantasy is simply amazing.
Laurent Cirade completed his classical training in music before moving to Paris, where he gained his first valuable experiences as a street musician. Soon after he was hired by the French National Orchestra and while sharpening his classical skills there he also added tango, jazz and pop to his repertoire. Additionally he worked with famous movie director Coline Serreau and choreograph Maurice Bejart.
Romanian-born Paul Staicu went straight from Bucharest Academy of Music to National Superior Conservatory of Paris for Music and Dance where it did not take him long to be awarded twice for “Best Composition” and “Jazz”. In order to perfect his qualification Paul studied and worked with international stars like Wynton Marsalis, Michel Portal, Didier Lockwood, Steve Coleman George Russell and many other illustrious musicians.
The first time the two instrumentalists performed together under the name of DUEL was in Fall 2001 at Théâtre Chocolat in Marseille. After having performed numerous gigs in France they finally set up a world tour which led them to Switzerland, Great Britain, Spain, USA, Latin America and South Eastern Europe. The two duelists graced the stage at such prestigious venues and festivals as Florence Gould Hall Theater in New York, La Cigale and Theatre des Mathurins in Paris, Edinburgh Fringe Festival or Al Bustan Festival in Beirut.
In 2008 Paul and Laurent successfully brought their distinctive musical comedy show to Germany as well, performing at Ruhrfestspielen Recklinghausen and TIPI Zelt am Kanzleramt in Berlin.
They return for numerous performances next year. Let them ENTERTAIN you!
