Artist Information

Paula Morelenbaum is the Grande Dame of Bossa Nova, a charismatic radiant star in the firmament of world music. She is considered to have achieved icon status after touring the world with Antonio Carlos Jobims band, the legendary Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, and as part the trio Morelenbaum/Sakamoto.

She has been celebrated in the greatest concert halls and jazz clubs in the world, among them Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 1994 Paula Morelenbaum received the Brazilian Music Award for her debut solo album, and again in 2004 with Trio Morelenbaum/ Sakamoto for Best Brazilian Music Group. Her current album, the superb Telecoteco, was recently voted among the top three Albums of the Year in Brazil, and is slated for an April 2010 release in Germany.

Paula Morelenbaum [] did one of the most subtle, original and successful tributes to Bossa Nova in a year filled with them. O GLOBO, 2008

Her current show pays homage to Bossa Nova, but serves up a contemporary reinterpretation with electronic sounds and extraordinary arrangements. Drum-machines and scratching are used in addition to classical instruments (cello, piano and guitar), without ever sacrificing the connection to Bossa Nova.

But the vital element is Paula Morelenbaums wonderful voice, gentle and enthralling at the same time. Enthusiastic album reviews rave about the sweet melancholy of her singing and how it perfectly embodies the Bossa Nova, a musical style that is more relevant than ever since its 50 year anniversary in 2008.

This brilliant singer from Rio de Janeiro will be touring Europe next year in support of her current album, Telecoteco which was recently being nominated for the Latin Grammies.
