The Music of China Moses sounds so traditional, you almost get the feeling that it was recorded in a jazz club back in the 50’s or 60’s - hr2 Kultur

Artist Information

China Moses is the personified American Entertainer - singer, author, composer, producer and MTV-presenter – and has already worked with great artists such as: Camille, Raul Midon and Guru. Despite her musical heir - her mother being the strong-voiced Jazz Diva Dee Dee Bridgewater – China’s first musical steps, were deliberately not towards Jazz music: “I am mainly influenced by Soul music and I love Rhythm and Blues”.

Back when she was a teenager singing was more important to her than going to school and with her obvious talent it led to her first label contract at a very young age. Then by chance - three album releases later - she met French Jazz Pianist Raphael Lemonnier: “I’ve recorded this new album with him but at first I didn’t want to go for a Jazz album at all!”, says Moses. Thankfully she did, as with “This One`s for Dinah” the thirty one year old artist presents a stunningly authentic 50’s Jazz album – a worthy tribute to the great Dinah Washington - which underlines her clear, ambitious mission: “I’ve stepped up to bring the Rock’n Roll aspect back into Jazz Music”.

The result is fascinating: China Moses interprets songs of the great Washington with her strong voice, energy, and humour without simply imitating them. She modernises and spices up classics and contributes two of her own compositions: “Dinah`s Blues” and “Gardenias For Dinah”

Her voice as well as her charisma as a Jazz performer is clearly inherited from her mother. When she sings the Blues, she makes it glow – both, her own compositions as well as her fiery interpretations of songs such as “Fat Daddy” or “What a different a day makes”. The song-arrangements focus on her strong, tremendous voice which she uses with power and then again with sensitive precision.

Even before the release of “This One’s for Dinah” (Blue Note Records) the media attention was incredible with features in important media such as Spiegel Online, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Jazzthetik, Jazzthing and many others.

After her first Jazz concerts in France including an incredible tour together with Raul Midon and great tour through the German speaking countries China Moses is set to enthuse audiences across Europe. In Spring and Summer 2010 she will return to festivals following great performances on high class festivals such as Jazz Baltica Salzau, Jazz Open Stuttgart, Enjoy Jazz Festival Heidelberg and great Venues such as Moods Zurich, Porgy & bess Vienna, Quasimodo Berlin.

A new period for Spring and Summer 2010 is sure to come after the overwhelming feedback of this great Homage!
