“He’s like Marvin Gaye singing soul to a new generation.”
Alex Cuba is a current Grammy/4x Latin Grammy/2x JUNO Award winner, singer-songwriter originally from Artemisa Cuba with a vast musical vision that is not tied to tradition.
His current album Mendó took home the 2022 Grammy for best Latin Pop Album ! It was Alex Cuba’s 4th nomination and first win, a tremendous accomplishment for an independent artist who already collaborated with the likes of Ron Sexsmith and Nelly Furtado in the past.
His musical evolution for years was all about searching for the simplicity and soul in Cuban music – taking apart the complex arrangements, mixing it with North American influences, adopting the melodic simplicity of pop music, looking to Cuban folk traditions for inspiration. His groove-laden, multi-culti sound is characterized by smoky vocals, harmonies and adept guitar work with magnetic hooks; tunes that marry the rolling sway of Afro-Latin rhythms and the bittersweet melodies of his native home with jazz for a new Latin soul sound.
With a heart as big as his Afro mane, the indie singer-songwriter overcomes all obstacles with ease and concentrates on what he does best: unify listeners from all walks of life with Spanish and English verses and a growing collection of feel-good Afro-Cuban jazz tracks skillfully combining exiting tempo changes, sophisticated instrumentation and superb adult songwriting. The result sounds like summer love: exciting and warm, but with a wink at the listener.
Alex’s vibrant eighth studio album, Mendó, is filled with international collaborations like Lila Downs, Raul Midon or Gilberto Santa Rosa. The artwork for the album marks another international project, created by an artist in Trinidad and Tobago, Brianna McCarthy, who caught Cuba’s eye when he noticed her work on the cover of a book and was drawn to “her unique interpretation of the African diaspora”.
